Room 8 quilt

After many hours of work, this quilt is finally complete.  As room parent for N.'s Kindergarten / First Grade class, it was my reponsibility to come up with a project for the students to do that would then be donated to the Spring Auction, the school's biggest fundraiser of the year.  Being the genius that I am, I thought, "Let's make a quilt.  We'll pick a theme, the kids can draw pictures with fabric pens and I can sew it all up into a beautiful quilt."  The thought I did NOT have, "But you're not a quilter.  Just because you can sew, doesn't mean you can quilt..."

Well, I have always wanted to make a quilt and I've taken a quilting class, read a lot about quilting and I do sew so how hard can it be, right?  OK, it wasn't really "hard" at all, but oh-so-time consuming.  What I thought would be easy (translate "fast") took me more than twenty hours of work, including the time I had to be in the classroom with the kids helping them draw their bug pictures.

Now, I am not complaining.  I am thrilled with the outcome and would do it again in a heartbeat.  But I have a whole new level of respect for quilters - who I already had a ton of respect for in the first place.

Really, I think it is just too cute. I found the insect border fabric at Stonemountain & Daughter in Berkeley, picked a few coordinating solids and light green with cream dots for the binding and backing. The kids did an amazing job of their drawings, especially considering they are all between the ages of 5 and 7 and some of them just really aren't into art.

I just stitched in the ditch all the way around to make it simple, and let's face it, not being a quilter I could have really ruined the whole thing had a attempted to do something more elaborate.  The binding is the part I am really proud of - that back of it is hand-sewn all around.  I have said more than once that I don't like hand-sewing at all, but now I am looking for more projects just so I can do it again.  Now, what to do for next year's auction...
